Local Vegan Restaurant Aims to Feed Regional Healthcare Workers, One Hospital at a Time

(Gulfport, FL)  - Golden Dinosaurs Vegan Deli (Golden Dinosaurs), a vegan restaurant and bakery in Gulfport, Florida, has joined a national effort to “feed the front lines” by organizing community support to deliver meals to healthcare workers fighting the COVID-19 crisis. The restaurant intends to kick the campaign off by feeding an entire hospital.

Faced with a rapidly changing local economy and a community of loyal customers in search of ways to help, Golden Dinosaurs owners Audrey and Brian Dingeman decided to put some of the positive momentum to work. The program, GDVD Healthcare Helpers, enables the purchase of individual or bulk box lunches to be prepared and delivered to healthcare workers at local hospitals. Golden Dinosaurs launched the program in partnership with Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, with a goal of feeding their entire 1,700 hospital staff.

“It’s a win, win, really. The program gives folks a way to support a group of people who could use it right now - in a way that simultaneously supports a small business and its employees,” said Audrey Dingeman.

Community support for the effort was immediately evident as over 370 lunches were sold in the first few hours of launching on the evening of Sunday, April 6. Box lunches include a vegan sandwich, side, house-made dessert and a whole lot of love. The restaurant's employees will prepare and deliver up to 30 box lunches daily to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, with hopes of reaching the whole hospital in the coming weeks and months.

As support for the GDVD Healthcare Helpers program increases, Golden Dinosaurs is looking to partner with additional local businesses and hospitals to provide a similar service as the COVID-19 crisis continues to impact the Tampa Bay area.

Golden Dinosaurs Vegan Deli is a combination deli, vegan butchery, and bakery, serving coffee, kombucha, beer and wine, located on Beach Boulevard in Gulfport, Florida. Most items are made from scratch, including all seitan and baked goods. In the face of the COVID-19 crisis, the restaurant quickly pivoted its entire business model in order to continue to remain operational while strictly following social distancing guidelines. Transactions became contactless, with phone and online orders accepted for pick up or delivery. Vegan pantry items, including vegan cheese, popcorn and homemade proteins, were introduced online alongside the regular menu of vegan comfort foods and baked goods. Golden Dinosaurs hopes to continue to provide contactless pick up and delivery service so long as the local and federal guidelines allow.
