ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA The Leadership St. Pete® (LSP) Class of 2020 has selected Family Resources as the beneficiary of this year’s class project. As one of the oldest leadership programs in America and a division of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce® and its 501(c)(3) Foundation, LSP is responsible for making a difference in the community by working with a local nonprofit organization to further its goals. Class members provide planning, fundraising and physical labor to execute the project.

"Our LSP classes work hard each year to demonstrate their care, concern and interest in our city. The class projects make a difference to those being served and demonstrates the intense passion our leaders have for making St. Petersburg shine," said Chris Steinocher, president and CEO of the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce.

The Family Resources Safe Connection Resource Center will provide homeless and unaccompanied youth age 16-24 access to vital tangible resources such as food, hygiene items, showers, and laundry. The Center will also be a safe place for the youth to go for a warm and welcoming space, support from caring adults, and a space to build a sense of community. The goal is to build a sense of welcome and warmth from the very first impression at the front entrance; once inside the building, there will be comfortable chairs, desks and tables for studying, facilities for showers, laundry and a food pantry. Trained staff will be constantly present to offer support and instill a sense of safety and belonging. The outdoor space will be a place to serve meals, hold wellness activities, educational talks, and recreational games.

“We are very excited to work collaboratively with Leadership St. Pete®, and honored that we are the recipient of this year’s class project,” said Lisa Davis, CEO of Family Resources.

The LSP class, comprised of professionals from a variety of St. Petersburg businesses, toured Family Resources St. Petersburg location and met with management and staff to discuss their needs. The development of the Safe Connection Center is now underway, and needs many interior and exterior upgrades to reflect the safe, positive, and supportive environment that Family Resources cultivates for the youth it serves. Planned improvements include creating a functional exterior space that can be used for education and wellness activities, landscaping upgrades, and vibrant interior space upgrades that reflect the spirit of the children that are being uplifted. The expected projected costs of improvements is $70,000, which the LSP class will raise by the end of April in order to complete the project by May 16, 2020.

The 39-member LSP Class of 2020 is presently seeking donations from individuals and businesses or in-kind contributions of products or services to complete the project.  Send tax deductible funds or inquiries about in-kind donations in support of this project to Courtney Smith of The St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce
