GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, July 12 with a Swedish film about three teen girls exploring gender roles in a “magical” way. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month.

Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information online:

About the July 12 film: Three bullied teenage girls are going through the throes of finding themselves in this 2015 Swedish fantasy feature. In a dark world of teen violence, sexual confusion and marginalization, the girls have only each other. A seismic shift happens when they discover a curious plant in their greenhouse. It turns out to have mysterious magical qualities that, when consumed, transforms the girls temporarily into boys. But not only does their gender change, the world around them, and their response to it, is profoundly altered. (Not rated)

Save the date, Thursday August 9, for the next film in the series. In this Oscar-nominated 2017 film, 17-year-old Elio enjoys a close relationship with his father, a professor, and his mother, a translator. Elio's sophistication and intellectual gifts suggest he is already a fully-fledged adult, but there is much that remains innocent about him, particularly about matters of the heart. One day, Oliver, a charming American scholar working on his doctorate, arrives as the annual summer intern that assists Elio's father. Amid the sun-drenched splendor of the North Italian setting, Elio and Oliver discover the beauty of awakening desire during a summer that will alter their lives forever. (Rated R)
