Congressman Jolly invited to discuss Stop Act at National Press Club
Rep. Nolan will join Jolly as they discuss ways to limit Congress’ telemarketing fundraising culture
Seminole, FL – Congressman David Jolly (R-FL) will discuss his proposed Stop Act and the long hours Members of Congress spend making phone calls to raise political funds at a National Press Club Newsmaker event on Monday, May 16 at 10 a.m.
In February, Jolly introduced the Stop Act (H.R. 4443), which would ban Members of Congress from personally asking for money.
“Let’s call the status quo of Members of Congress dialing for dollars what it really is - cheating the taxpayer. It’s a first-rate bipartisan shakedown of the American people and it’s time to put an end to it,” Jolly said. “In any other profession, if you spent half your week doing something other than what you were hired to do, you'd be fired.”
Joining Jolly at the Newsmaker event will be Congressman Rick Nolan (D-MN), one of the first to cosponsor Jolly’s landmark bipartisan legislation. The Minnesota Congressman served three terms in the House in the 1970’s and later was elected to Congress in 2013. Nolan says that when he returned to D.C. he hardly recognized the institution because of the amount of time members spend dialing for dollars.
Jolly, Nolan and other sponsors of the Stop Act maintain that this is a Congressional reform that can change the culture of Washington, forcing members to put down the phone and get back to solving the nation’s most pressing problems.
The National Press Club is located on the 13th Floor of the National Press Building, 529 14th Street NW, Washington, D.C.
This event is open to credentialed media and NPC members, free of charge. No advance registration is required.
The National Press Club President Thomas Burr will moderate Monday’s news conference.
Members of the media outside D.C. interested in joining the Newsmaker event via a conference line should contact Preston Rudie at email@example.com.
