Leadership St. Pete® Class of 2016 Delivers Extreme Makeover of ALPHA House of Pinellas

ST. PETERSBURG, FL - May 2, 2016 – The Leadership St. Pete® (LSP) Class of 2016 will unveil their improvements to ALPHA House of Pinellas County on Wednesday, May 18 at a 10 a.m. breakfast and ribbon cutting at ALPHA House, 701 5th Ave. North. Six months of renovation work planned and organized by the 35-member LSP class included safe play areas for the babies, more up-to-date security cameras, improved locks on doors, repairs to the perimeter fencing and automatic gate, exterior landscaping and shade in a courtyard gathering area, all to enhance the nurturing environment.

The LSP Class of 2016 held a series of fundraising events and reached out to local businesses and individuals for donations, products and services to achieve their goal of raising $125,000. Class members began demolition in mid-March and were joined by local contractor Seneca Construction Service, Inc. to complete the construction work. Subsequent Saturdays in April are being spent at ALPHA House, tilling soil, removing debris, and preparing for landscape and hardscape changes to the facility as designed by Wannemacher Jensen Architects and King Engineering. Both firms are represented by LSP Class of 2016 members who contributed their time and talent to the project and inspired the entire class to achieve the goal for ALPHA House.

Jennifer Stracick, Executive Director of ALPHA House, Pinellas County’s only residential maternity program, has said little to the women and babies living at the facility during the process.

“The LSP volunteers did such a great job keeping the construction area contained, I think the girls are going to be very surprised when they see the results,” said Stracick. “It looks amazing and will be so much more comfortable with new furnishings, computers, planters in the courtyard and umbrellas for shade.”

ALPHA House provides housing and supportive services to homeless pregnant women and teens, new mothers with infants, and families experiencing crisis pregnancies. The 35-member LSP group chosen for this year agreed this cause strengthens the St. Petersburg community by providing a safe environment for future citizens to thrive during these most fragile moments of their lives. Since 1979, ALPHA has served more than 3,000 women, teens and infants annually. About 90 percent of those who have gone through the ALPHA House program made a successful transition into permanent housing and independent living.
