Creative Clay welcomes Emily Turnage as Community Arts Director

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Local artist, musician and Creative Clay teaching artist Emily Turnage joins the Creative Clay staff April 13 as the new Community Arts Director, following the departure of Charlie Bachmann, who is moving to Des Moines, Iowa.

A St. Petersburg native, Turnage graduated from St. Petersburg High School, then University of South Florida with a B.A. in Psychology. Emily has worked for Creative Clay for the past three years as a teaching artist, working with small groups of member artists in the studio and community.

As an accomplished musician and band member of Hussar, a local group playing experimental, progressive and alternative music, Turnage brings a musical perspective to her leadership and direction of Creative Clay’s Community Arts Program, which serves adult artists diagnosed with disabilities. Turnage also will direct Creative Clay’s annual Folkfest St. Pete and will coordinate volunteer efforts. She and her band have played at Folkfest St. Pete, Creative Clay’s annual fundraiser, and at monthly Artwalk events.

Turnage looks forward to utilizing her unique perspective, musical talents and knowledge of various styles of art in her new position. “The combination of her artistic ability and her background in psychology and mental health will be a great addition to our talented staff,” said Kim Dohrman, CEO. “We are delighted to have her join our team.” Turnage notes that besides music, her interests include crossword puzzles, metal detecting, and jokes.
