Northside Hospital’s Cardiology Team Performs Their First Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) Procedure
St. Petersburg, FL (March 7, 2016) – The Structural Heart Disease team at Northside Hospital has successfully performed the first transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in St. Petersburg. The procedure is designed to replace a patient’s diseased aortic valve without traditional open-heart surgery, using a first-of-its-kind artificial heart valve.
Northside Hospital is among a select group of hospitals in the United States chosen to treat patients with the Edwards Sapien Transcatheter Heart Valve. Prior to the advent of TAVR, there was no definitive treatment option for patients who were unable to undergo surgical aortic valve replacement therapy – the gold standard treatment for most adult patients with severe aortic stenosis. Many patients are not treated because they are not a candidate for surgery, have not received a definitive diagnosis, or because they delay or decline the procedure for a variety of reasons. TAVR opens up a new option for these patients.
The Northside Hospital Structural Heart Disease team that successfully performed the TAVR procedure included cardiovascular and thoracic surgeons Curtis Bryan, MD and Michael DeFrain, MD; interventional cardiologists Jesse Klein, DO and Andrew Rosenthal, MD; and cardiologists Peter Wassmer, MD and Alberto Morales, MD.
"A multi-disciplinary team, led by cardiothoracic surgeons, interventional cardiologists, cardiologists, anesthesiologists, nurses and staff, are bringing the highest level of heart care to our community," said Dia Nichols, FACHE, president and chief executive officer at Northside Hospital. "We are proud to have been chosen among a select group of hospitals to begin performing this revolutionary procedure in St. Petersburg.”
To accommodate TAVR procedures, Northside Hospital constructed a new, 1,300 square-foot hybrid interventional operating room. The expansive operating room offers physicians advanced, state-of-the-art technology to perform leading-edge procedures.
