SPC Summer registration is open
Registration for the summer semester is open. The regular summer term begins Monday, May 14, and the Summer Express term begins June 11. SPC has guaranteed scheduling, so no class will be canceled once it is posted. The last day to register for an online course for the regular session is Sunday, May 13. Learn more here.
SPC Community Author Series: Tim Dorsey
St. Petersburg College will host a Community Author Series with Tim Dorsey at 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 12 at Seminole Community Library at SPC, Annex Conference Center, 9200 113th St. N. Family-friendly “Touch-a-Truck” event on April 14
Join SPC for its family-friendly event “Touch-a-Truck” event on Saturday, April 14 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the SPC Allstate Center, 3200 34th St., St. Petersburg. Children, teens and parents will see impressive emergency vehicles up close, learn about their functions and find out what exciting careers are associated with those vehicles.
Titan Trot 5K Race on April 14
St. Petersburg College will host its first Titan Trot 5K Race at 8 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 at the SPC Clearwater Campus, Quad, 2465 Drew St. The race will start at the Clearwater Campus and head down the trail to Cliff Stephens Park. Registration is $10 and all proceeds from the event will fund SPC student scholarships. All levels are welcomed. For more information, visit here.
Clearwater East Community Library at St. Petersburg College Grand Opening Celebration April 21
St. Petersburg College and the City of Clearwater will celebrate the grand opening of the new Clearwater East Community Library at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21at SPC Clearwater Campus, 2465 Drew St. The new library is a joint partnership with City of Clearwater and is located on the SPC Clearwater Campus. The public is invited to join city of Clearwater Mayor George N. Cretekos, SPC Clearwater Provost Stan Vittetoe, members of the City Council, City Manager Bill Horne, and Clearwater Public Library System Director Jennifer Obermaier at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“The Value of Poetry” Lunch and Learn Event
To honor National Poetry Month, St. Petersburg College will host The Value of Poetry, a lunch and learn event, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 26 at the SPC Allstate Center, Desoto Room, 3200 34th St. S., St. Petersburg. The keynote speaker will be Florida’s Poet Laureate Dr. Peter Meinke, a national award-winning author of more than 20 books. Attendees will receive a poem to share on social media using #pocketpoem. Upcoming Drone Certification training at SPC’s Workforce Institute
The Workforce Institute at St. Petersburg College will be offering the following courses in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) in April and May.
UAS (Drone) for Public Safety Course on April 5-April 28 (class held on four consecutive Thursdays from 6-8:30 p.m. and from 12-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 26 for hands-on UAS flight), SPC’s Allstate Center, Room 219, 3200 34th St. S., St. Petersburg. This course is designed for police, fire department and EMS personnel. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), or Drones, are changing the public safety sector. These devices are no longer toys, but tools used to keep officers and communities safe. They’re becoming an essential life-saving tool for public safety departments. Topics in the four-week course include: Hands-on UAS flight, UAS Regulations, flight operations and restrictions, UAS Loading and performance, emergency procedures, crew resource management, radio communication procedures, UAS performance, psychological effects of drugs and alcohol, aeronautical decision-making and judgment, airport operations, maintenance and pre-flight inspection procedures and legal considerations. Upon successful completion of the course, students will have the knowledge required to pass the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate Exam. Registration can be completed by going to http://bit.ly/2EqMfGJ.
Four-week UAS Remote Pilot (Drone) Certificate Prep Course on May 3-May 24, 2018 (class held on four consecutive Thursdays) 6-8:30 p.m., SPC Downtown Campus, Room 356, 244 2nd Ave S., St. Petersburg. This four-week course is designed to prepare students to pass the FAA Remote Pilot Certificate exam. The course will include UAS regulations, flight operations and restrictions, emergency procedures, crew resource management, radio communication procedures, aeronautical decision-making and judgement, and maintenance and pre-flight inspection procedures. Career opportunities for students with drone training include business-entrepreneurship, military drone pilot, firefighter, disaster relief, search and rescue, law enforcement, oil and gas operations, border patrol, agriculture, package delivery, forestry, engineering, computer science, real estate, film and photography and other industries.
Nine-week MSSC Certified Production Technician Course on May 1-July 2, 2018 (class held on Tuesdays and Wednesdays) 5:30-8 p.m., SPC Epicenter Campus, Room 318, 13805 58th St. N., Clearwater. This course provides entry-level training in manufacturing essentials to include safety awareness, production and processes, quality assurance and maintenance awareness. Upon successful completion, students earn the Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) Certified Production Technician (CPT) certification. Fiftteen credits from this course can transfer to an Associate’s degree in Engineering Technology. Registration can be completed by going to https://bit.ly/2IgyjO1
