ST. PETERSBURG CITY COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY APPROVES RENAMING MAIN LIBRARY
THE PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA MAIN COMMUNITY LIBRARY
Today, St. Petersburg City Council unanimously approved the renaming of the city’s main library (3745 9th Avenue North) after former President Barack Obama.
In February, Mayor Kriseman announced the name change along with approximately $6 million in renovations, utilizing Penny for Pinellas funds.
Said Mayor Kriseman: “Highlighting Barack Obama’s extraordinary story and history-making presidency in this way will inspire generations of young people in St. Pete and will complement the city buildings and other amenities that bear the name of local trailblazers. I am looking forward to unveiling the name change and cutting the ribbon on what will prove to be an exciting and innovative hub for learning in our city.”
The second public hearing on this item will be April 19, 2018.
Projects in the library upgrade include:
o 42 Parking Spaces
o Complete fire sprinkler system
o ADA compliant restrooms
o Rear patio renovation & outdoor gathering space
o Reconfiguring interior spaces with new programming areas
Prior to moving forward with the renaming of our main library to the ‘President Barack Obama Main Community Library’ and the associated programming enhancements, Mayor Kriseman invited programmatic feedback via our website. Mayor Kriseman's vision for this work requires the involvement of our community.
