GULFPORT, FLORIDA: The LGBTQ Resource Center at Gulfport Public Library is proud to continue its monthly LGBTQ Film Series on Thursday, February 8th with a cowboy love story which has become a modern-day classic of LGBTQ stories on film. The Film Series is a free gathering to watch a film in the company of friends and neighbors on the second Thursday of each month. Popcorn, candy, bottled water and soda are available. Donations will be accepted to benefit the LGBTQ Resource Center. Feel free to bring your own “brown bag” supper and beverages.

Each film begins at 7pm in the Friends Room at Gulfport Public Library (5501 28th Avenue South). Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Licensing restrictions prohibit explicitly naming the titles of films in general press releases. But feel free to call the Library at (727) 893-1074 for the film title and other information about the film series. Or find titles and more information at the Library’s Facebook page:

About the February 8th film: Based on the short story by Annie Proulx, this 2005 film is a pioneering work of cinema for depicting the story of gay characters in a popular “mainstream” film. It stars Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal as a ranch hand and rodeo cowboy who meet in 1963 while driving cattle in the west. At a time and in a setting where love between men is scorned, they forge a complicated bond that lasts through the years. An Oscar winner for Best Director, and nominee for many other Oscars and awards. “The Best Movie of the Year.” Miami Herald (Rated R)

Save the date for the next film in the monthly series on Thursday, March 1st. From acclaimed South Korean director Chan-wook Park, set in 1930s era Japanese-occupied Korea, this 2016 film is part crime thriller, part erotic love story, in which a female pickpocket takes a job as handmaiden to the niece of a rich book collector. The handmaiden is drawn into a plot with an accomplice who wants to claim the niece’s fortune. Things become more complicated when the handmaiden begins to fall in love with the niece. The film, based on the popular British novel “Fingersmith” by Sarah Waters, has received accolades as a modern cinematic work of art. “Go see it. If you love cinema at all, go see it.” Detroit News (Not Rated – Adults Only)

NOTE: The film series ordinarily takes place on the second Thursday of each month, but for March only will take place March 1st due to an event scheduling conflict.

Watch for announcements of other films as they are added to the series on the second Thursday of each month.
