ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11

The Annual General Meeting will be held Wednesday (Note: NOT THURSDAY} at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter. Park in the parking lot on 2nd Avenue right off 4th St. Mayor Kriseman will be the featured speaker. The meeting will begin at 7:00 but refreshments will be served from 6:30 -- an opportunity to mix and mingle.

The 2017 Board of Directors will also be elected that night. As per our bylaws. following are the biographies of the candidates and information re: the election:

St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association
2017 Board of Directors Election

The election of the 2017 Board of Directors will take place at the January 11th Annual Meeting at 7:00 p.m. at the Cathedral Church of St. Peter, located at 140 4th Street North (parking and entrance on 2nd Ave N). The Board Officers will be determined by the newly elected Board after the General Membership election. Based on an Amendment approved by the membership at the July 2014 General Meeting, there can be up to 15 Directors. As usual, there is a good mixture of applicants standing for election, but there are still open positions to be filled. Nominations of a qualified member can still be made from the floor at the meeting with the permission of the nominated candidate. If none are made, then only the candidates listed here will be on the election slate.

New Board Applicants
DOUGLAS, JOE
– Joe has been a proud resident of beautiful downtown St. Petersburg the past 4 years. He enjoys the community’s vibe and flourishing growth. His professional background includes restaurant and retail management over the past 25 years. He is currently serving on the board of DTSP Toastmasters, where he’s polishing his speaking techniques for his future in public speaking. He has been an active member of SPDNA since 1/2016 and regularly participates in the SPDNA Saturday morning cleanups. As a SPDNA Board member, Joe will be focusing on ways to engage the younger community and more local businesses in SPDNA.
PHILLIPS, STEVEN – Steve has been a fulltime resident of St. Petersburg since 2012, part time since 2006. In 1997, he joined the faculty of the School of Education, Brooklyn College, in New York, and still tele-commutes as Coordinator of Alternative Certification Programs, a program which has prepared more than 3500 career-changers to become teachers since 2000. Prior to 1997, he was a high school teacher and principal in Syracuse, New York; Marcellus, New York; and New York City; then served for 14 years as Superintendent of Alternative High Schools and Programs, supervising 62 schools and programs, which served over 80,000 students annually. He received his BA and MA degrees from Stanford University. In addition to teaching at Brooklyn College, he taught part-time at Stanford, Syracuse, and Fordham Universities. No longer physically commuting back to New York, Steve has more free time to contribute to a city which he has come to love by serving on the SPDNA Board.
WAECHTER, JOHN – John was born and raised in St. Petersburg and has lived here all his life. He graduated from the University of Florida with an accounting degree and was a practicing CPA for three years before entering the securities business. He spent twenty five years as the Executive Vice President of William R. Hough & Co. until the firm was sold in 2004. He then attended law school at Stetson University College of Law and is now a practicing attorney and partner at Englander Fischer in downtown St. Pete. John serves on the boards of the Transamerica Mutual Funds and WRH Income Properties, Inc. His charitable work includes board positions at Operation PAR, Inc., Boley-PAR, Inc. and Remember Honor Support, Inc. John is also a member of the finance committee of the Parkshore Plaza HOA. He enjoys snow skiing and spending time with his son and daughter and their families, who reside in the Old Northeast. John is interested in serving on the board of the SPDNA as a means of giving back to the community that has been such a big part of his life.

Current Board Members Seeking Re-election
Carder, Paul
– Paul holds a BA in Economics from the University of Michigan and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Prior to his retirement in 1995 he had a 30-year career in advertising in Chicago, New York and Toronto ending as Chairman and CEO of a major communications holding company. Following his retirement he has served as a Dean of a Community College, Marketing and Business Development Director of a major corporate law firm, and as Director, Marketing and Strategic Initiatives at the Morean Arts Center. Since moving to St. Petersburg in 2007 he has served on a number of not-for-profit Boards including American Stage, the St. Petersburg Area Chamber of Commerce, Leadership St. Pete Planning Committee, Leadership St. Pete Alumni Association, and A Simple Theater and for the last 4 years the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association.
Driscoll, Gina – Gina has been proud to live, work and play in this vibrant downtown community for over ten years. Since 2014 she has served on the Board as your Event Chair, organizing all social events and community service projects. Her professional background includes extensive experience in sales and marketing in the hotel industry and in media advertising. She is currently the Sales and Marketing Manager at the Hampton Inn & Suites on Beach Drive and also serves on the Board of the Downtown Business Association.
FERRULO, MARK - Mark is the founder and executive director of Progress Florida, a statewide progressive advocacy organization. A graduate of the University of South Florida, Mark has been working for non-profit, public interest causes across the state for over two decades. Areas of expertise include non-profit management, internet organizing, social media, media outreach and event planning. Raised in south St. Petersburg, he has been living, working and playing in downtown St. Petersburg since moving back to his hometown in 2008. He joined the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association at the beginning of 2014 and lives at 1010 Central Condos where he is active in the condo owners association and chairs the Landscape Committee. When not attending a Rays or Rowdies game, Mark enjoys saltwater fishing, biking and hiking, and the downtown nightlife. Mark served as SPDNA Vice-President in 2016.
HARVEY, DAN – Dan has lived in the St. Petersburg since 1963. He founded the popular Harvey’s 4th Street Grill. The past several years Dan has been a very active participant in the Waterfront Master Plan process, providing his input in over 100 city wide community meetings. He is active in the Central Avenue Council and Vice President of the EDGE District. He is currently working on a design process for the EDGE District, a National Main Street member. Dan has served three terms on the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association Board of Directors.
MASON, JOHN - John, a retired physician, lives within the geographical boundaries of the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association and is an active and enthusiastic Board member. His continuing goal is to help the downtown neighborhood to continue to improve. John explains that his major interest is the livability of downtown as a place to live and work. As one whose lifelong interest is community involvement, he appreciates and recognizes the downtown neighborhood’s complexity and its challenges. He is eager to continue serving as a Board member and looks forward to the opportunity of contributing to the association’s work to make our neighborhood ever better.
MAY, ALFRED – Al has lived in St. Petersburg since he was 5 years old. He is a graduate of Boca Ciega High School, St. Petersburg Junior College, and the University of Florida. He is a retired Banking Executive, and served as President of Home Federal Savings, Barnet Bank of Pinellas County and Republic Bank. He has served on many Boards such as; All Children’s Hospital, American Red Cross, St. Petersburg Free Clinic, The Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, The American Stage, The Palladium and the St. Petersburg Opera Company. He considers himself a Patron of the Arts by financially supporting: The American Stage, FreeFall Theatre, The Florida Orchestra, The Studio@620, The St. Petersburg Opera Company and the Palladium Chamber Music Concerts. Al’s goal is to work with other St. Petersburg Downtown Association Members to maintain and enhance the quality of our neighborhood. Al served as SPDNA Treasurer in 2016.
RIMER, TERRY - Terry is a National Account Sales Manager with 30+ years’ of healthcare experience with Roche Diagnostics where she has earned extensive recognition for her sales management achievements, having current account responsibility for the UnitedHealth Group. Terry hails from Ohio and earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. A resident of the Tampa Bay area since 1995, she has lived in downtown St. Petersburg since March of 2002 with husband, Todd Germann. She served three terms on the Straub Court HOA Board. Her other activities include Rays baseball, cycling, hiking, international travel, and community volunteering. Terry has served 3 years on the Board of Directors, actively involved in SPDNA events and the election and membership committees.
SCAFATI, ALBERT – Al hails from Connecticut where he began his career in residential real estate. He has been a commercial real estate broker since 1995. He served on the Board of Directors of the Greater New Haven Assoc. of Realtors from 2001-2013, and was recognized by this association as Realtor of the Year in 2010. As a member of the Board of the Connecticut Association of Realtors, he served on the Legislative Committee from 2010-2013, working with legislators to enact laws that benefit the real estate industry. He was also a member of the Quinnipiac Chamber of Commerce and served on that Board for 14 years, including six years on the Executive Board. As chair of the Chamber’s legislative committee, he lobbied to help promote small and large businesses. He was also active in the Wallingford, Connecticut Rotary Club, the YMCA, Boys and Girls Club, and more. In 2010, he and wife Joanne permanently relocated to Beach Drive in 2012. Al has served as President of the SPDNA Board of Directors 2015-2016.
WHITE, BILL - Bill served on the 2015 Best Practice Construction Committee for downtown. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Madison and on other Condo & Homeowner Association Boards. He is retired from the Pinellas County Government Tax Collector’s Office where he was a Departmental Training Specialist. He served as Co-Chair of The Southwest Florida Motor Services Coalition as well as chaired the Florida Tax Collector Association Educational Committee for the statewide Fall Education Forum. Bill is looking to continue the friendly-involved neighborhood environment of downtown St. Petersburg through his involvement with the St. Petersburg Downtown Neighborhood Association. Bill served as SPDNA Secretary in 2016.
