VETERANS, ACTIVE MILITARY RECEIVE THANKS WITH VETERANS DAY DISCOUNTS; City Honors Veterans During Annual Remembrance Celebration
ST. PETERSBURG, FL (November 10, 2016) - The city of St. Petersburg, select museums, Sunken Gardens, and PSTA show their gratitude for veterans and active military for tomorrow, November 11, with special activities, discounted admission and free bus rides.
The city of St. Petersburg will honor veterans, active-duty military and their families during the annual city of St. Petersburg Veterans Day Celebration at 8 a.m. tomorrow in Williams Park, 350 2nd Avenue North. During the ceremony, Mayor Rick Kriseman will present Michael Jernigan, USMC (Ret.), who served during Operation Iraqi Freedom, with the 2016 Honored Veteran Award. The Gibbs High School Pinellas County Center for the Arts Choir will perform and light refreshments will be available. Activities will be held near the Veterans Memorial.
Select St. Petersburg museums and Sunken Gardens will honor veterans and active military for their service with special activities and discounted admission tomorrow:
The Dali Museum, One Dali Boulevard, will hold a recognition ceremony at 11 a.m. in the Avant Garden, with the U.S. Central Command Color Guard as special guests. Following the color guard performance, wishes from the Garden's Wish tree will be read and guests may tie personal wishes on the tree using red and blue ribbons. Museum guests are also invited to donate personal hygiene items, travel-size, non-perishable food and drinks, or small entertainment items, and create hand-decorated care packages. At the Museum of Fine Arts, 255 Beach Dr. NE, veterans and active-duty military showing valid ID, will receive complimentary admission for themselves and one guest each tomorrow. Museum memberships will also be available for half-price for both active and retired military on Veterans Day only. www.mfastpete.org.
Veterans and active military with ID will also receive free admission to the St. Petersburg Museum of History, 335 2nd Ave. NE, where they may view Fighting for the Right to Fight - African American Experiences in WWII, on exhibit through March 5, 2017.
The Florida Holocaust Museum, 55 5th St. N., offers free admission and free audio tours to veterans with ID tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with limited free parking available for veterans. The Museum always offers free admission to active-duty U.S. military. The Museum's last admission is one hour before closing. www.flholocaustmuseum.org
While the Morean Arts Center, 719 Central Ave., is always free, veterans and active military are invited to experience the recently-relocated Chihuly Collection, at 720 Central Ave., and receive tomorrow's discounted admission of $17.95. The special ticket price includes free glass-blowing demonstrations between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
And U.S. veterans and active military with ID may tour the lush tropical beauty of Sunken Gardens, 1825 Fourth St. N., with free admission from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Veterans Day.
PSTA shows its gratitude by offering free rides on any bus or trolley tomorrow by showing the bus driver a military ID; VA medical card ID; veteran's designation on a driver's license; or certificate of release or discharge from active duty.
