St. Petersburg Yacht Club Christens New J70 Sailboat Fleet & Hosts the Club’s Annual Club Championship

This past weekend The St. Petersburg Yacht Club hosted its 4th Annual Sailing Club Championships for the coveted Commodore Bruce Watters Trophy. Nine teams participated sailing in the Club’s new fleet of J70 sailboats, which were christened by the Officers of the Club, kicking off the competition on Friday evening.

With the cold front moving through the area on Friday, the sailing conditions for competition were ideal with a breeze in the 10-15 knot range. There was plenty of action on the race-course with multiple teams scoring finishes in the top three.

St. Petersburg Yacht Club Members, Mike Funsch and his team of Joe Frohock, Bill Icely and Karen Park took home the title for the second year in a row. A closely fought battle over David Mendelblatt, Dorothy Mendelblatt, Nick Carper and Mitch Rogers. In third place was Past Commodore John Jennings and his team of Jay Jennings, Susan Wallace and Teresa Hopkins. These fine men and women displayed the true meaning of sportsmanship on the water.

Rich in history and tradition, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club is one of the most historic yacht clubs in the United States. Established in 1909 and having been completely renovated in the early 1990s, the Club is located on the sparkling waterfront of beautiful downtown St. Petersburg, Florida. A gathering place for avid sailors, power boaters and community leaders, the St. Petersburg Yacht Club is also one of Tampa Bay’s most prestigious social venues. The St. Petersburg Yacht Club is a private club and memberships are available by invitation. To learn more about the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, please visit www.spyc.org
